The Blues got their FIFA Club World Cup adventure off to the perfect start on Tuesday night in Atlanta, putting in a dominant display to see off a battling LAFC side 2-0. Right from the whistle, Chelsea looked sharp and hungry, controlling the game and setting a strong tone as they chase top spot in Group D.
Chelsea weren't messing around. They bossed possession from the get-go, pinning LAFC back and hunting for an early breakthrough. Youngster Noni Madueke tested veteran keeper Hugo Lloris with a low drive in the 15th minute, setting the pattern.
The constant pressure finally told just after the half-hour mark. Nicolas Jackson, buzzing with intent, slipped a gorgeous through ball behind the LAFC defense. Pedro Neto, showing cool composure, danced past Ryan Hollingshead with a neat feint and calmly slotted past Lloris to send the Chelsea fans wild – 1-0!
LAFC threw on the experienced Olivier Giroud at halftime hoping for a spark, but Chelsea's backline stood firm. The Blues almost grabbed a second shortly after the restart when Jackson's powerful header looked destined for the net, only for Timothy Tillman to pull off a heroic goal-line block. LAFC did have a brief glimmer when danger-man Denis Bouanga forced Robert Sánchez into a save, but it was a rare moment of worry for the Premier League side. The points were safely wrapped up with just over 10 minutes to play, and it was a moment for the new boy.
Making his Chelsea debut, Liam Delap floated a beautiful cross into the mixer. Enzo Fernández, showing terrific technique, brought it down and whipped a left-footed finish into the corner – a classy goal to double the lead and seal the win. Chelsea saw the game out comfortably, with Neto even rattling the crossbar with the very last kick, a fitting exclamation point on their superiority.
The Blues head to Philadelphia next, facing a huge test against Brazil's Flamengo on Friday, June 20th. LAFC, needing a response, travel to Nashville to take on Espérance de Tunis the same day.
This was a statement win from Chelsea. They looked every bit the favourites, combining experience with exciting new energy – Delap's debut assist was a real positive.
While LAFC fought hard defensively, they couldn't muster enough threat to truly trouble the Blues. Beyond the three points, this match made history as the first-ever Club World Cup clash between English and American clubs, adding an extra layer of excitement to the tournament. Group D is heating up nicely!
