The Tunisian champions of Espérance Sportive de Tunis kept their FIFA Club World Cup dream alive with a tense 1-0 victory over Los Angeles FC in Nashville, a result propelled as much by the unwavering spirit of their supporters as by the heroics on the pitch. This crucial win sent Espérance level on points with Chelsea in Group D and eliminated the MLS side, setting up a high-stakes finale against the English giants.
While the official crowd at GEODIS Park was a modest 13,651 in the 30,000-seat stadium, the presence and voice of the Espérance faithful were outsized. Vibrant pockets of red and gold transformed sections of the Nashville venue into a cauldron of North African passion. Their chants and drums provided a relentless soundtrack, particularly after Youcef Belaili's goal ignited "wild celebrations from the Tunisian contingent" and sent roars that "shook the roof" according to witnesses. However, this display of support came despite significant obstacles. Pre-match tensions flared when a prominent Espérance fan was arrested by US police during supporter rallies, an incident captured in a viral video that added an unexpected layer of drama to the build-up. More crucially, the tournament has been severely impacted by extreme summer weather – a combination of severe thunderstorms disrupting travel and a brutal heatwave pushing temperatures towards 41°C (106°F) with high humidity. These conditions prevented a large contingent of Espérance supporters who had mobilized in the US, particularly after their team's opening match in Philadelphia, from making the journey to Nashville. Many who had celebrated passionately in Philadelphia and New York found themselves stranded or unable to travel safely to Tennessee. Those who made it ensured their team felt the backing of a nation.
The match itself was a high-stakes rollercoaster befitting the elimination scenario. Espérance started brightly, with Youcef Belaili forcing a superb early save from Hugo Lloris. The Tunisians continued to threaten, Rodrigo Rodrigues rattling the post, while LAFC also had moments—most notably when David Martínez’s first-half strike was ruled out for offside, one of two LAFC goals chalked off before halftime. The second half brought controversy. Belaili was initially awarded a penalty after a driving run, only for VAR to overturn the decision and book him for simulation—a potentially devastating blow. Yet, Espérance, channeling the resilience of their traveling fans, responded with fierce resolve. In the 70th minute, the redemption arc was complete.
Amine Ben Hamida surged down the left, and when his run was halted, Belaili pounced on the loose ball, firing a low shot through Lloris’s legs to send the Tunisian fans into delirium. Just as Espérance looked set to see out the win, LAFC were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time.
VAR intervened again, awarding a penalty after Khalil Guenichi’s challenge on Marlon. Denis Bouanga stepped up, but Béchir Ben Said produced a miraculous save with his trailing leg in the 99th minute, preserving the clean sheet and sparking scenes of utter relief and joy among the Espérance players and supporters.
Espérance coach Maher Kanzari directly linked the victory to his team's fortitude and the fan support: “We showed great character tonight. Even when decisions went against us, the players kept believing. Belaïli’s goal was a reward for our persistence, and Ben Said’s penalty save was world class. Now, everything is on the line against Chelsea. This spirit comes from our people, here and at home”.
Match-winner Youcef Belaïli, named Man of the Match, beamed: “It was a tough match, but we never gave up. I’m proud of the team and happy to score such an important goal. We heard our fans all game, they gave us extra energy. We know Chelsea will be another big test, but we’re ready to fight for qualification”.
LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo acknowledged the narrow margins: “It’s a tough result to take. We created chances, but football is about taking them. I’m proud of the effort and our fans’ support. We’ll regroup and finish the tournament with pride against Flamengo”.
Espérance’s victory, forged amidst adversity on and off the pitch, sets up a winner-takes-all clash against Chelsea in Philadelphia on Tuesday. A win sends the Tunisians into the knockout rounds, while Chelsea only needs a draw to progress on goal difference.
LAFC, eliminated after two narrow defeats where they failed to score, faces Brazilian power Flamengo in a dead rubber.
The Tunisian giants, fueled by the passion of their supporters who defied distance and weather, and inspired by the brilliance of Belaili and Ben Said, have proven their resilience.
Their dream of Club World Cup glory, amplified by the unwavering voice of their fans, lives on for one more decisive night in Philadelphia.
