Kai Havertz (25) scored a goal and an assist to help Arsenal stay in the Premier League title race.

One of five Arsenal players who scored, Havertz played a crucial role in a 5-1 Arsenal victory over Manchester City at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal rejoiced in 14 straight league games without a loss following this victory. In a season of disappointments for Manchester City, they might have imagined that they were recovering on the right track after advancing in the UEFA Champions League last week.

However, two minutes into the game, they were brought straight back down to earth when Manuel Akanji lost the ball 25 yards from his own goal, and Kai Havertz fed it to Martin Odegaard, who tapped it into an empty goal with ease.

Stefan Ortega was picking up the ball from his goal for the second time a few seconds later when Gabriel Martinelli flicked the ball over him. Luckily for an anxious City, though, the Brazilian had got himself involved in a borderline offside in the build-up.

Pep Guardiola's struggling team took ages to trouble David Raya, but when they did, they made the Spanish goalkeeper produce an astonishing save. He denied Josko Gvardiol with a fine one-handed stop at very close range.

But City were demonstrating that they could have another mistake shortly afterwards. Mateo Kovacic gave the ball away 20 yards from goal, but wide-open Kai Havertz somehow missed his shot with just Ortega to beat.

Having had only six touches in the first 45 minutes for Erling Haaland, it was a surprise that he grabbed City's equaliser so soon after the restart when he showed great calm to nod in at the back post after Savinho left a teasing cross hanging.
No sooner had they got the game back, however, than they lost it again.
A unusually loose Phil Foden pass was intercepted by Thomas Partey, who marched forward from midfield and had his strongly deflected shot find its way into the corner.
The Gunners would not be at ease with having just a one-goal cushion, so they were likely to go for a third.

That is what their young star Myles Lewis-Skelly delivered with the third goal when he shot the ball into the far corner. He also added some excitement to the match by imitating Haaland's celebration.

That did not really motivate City; instead, it motivated Arsenal even more. They scored a fourth goal almost 15 minutes later when Havertz made up for his earlier miss by curling the ball into the far corner after a swift Gunners counter-attack.

Guardiola was frustrated on the bench, but he could not turn the game around. He saw his team fall eleven points from the top of the table after they had lost just their second Premier League game since January in their last 41 games.

It was Arsenal's day, and they even earned a few cheers from their fans near the end as they claimed their longest-ever run of unbeaten league games since 2018. They rounded it off with a great fifth goal as Ethan Nwaneri volleyed in with the last kick of the match.
